An August Bucket List for the Catholic Mom

August has always felt a little bittersweet to me.

The days are still long and warm, but you can almost feel a new season waiting around the corner. Before long, backpacks will be packed, calendars will fill up, and life will settle back into its familiar routines. But before we rush ahead, what if we chose to truly savor these last weeks of summer?

Life isn’t meant to simply be checked off a to-do list. It is meant to be lived. God has filled our days with ordinary moments that become extraordinary when we choose to notice them. This month, instead of focusing on everything you have to do, focus on the beautiful memories you can create with the people you love most.

Grow Closer to Jesus

The greatest gift you can give your family is a mother whose heart is close to Christ. You don’t have to spend hours in prayer to grow in holiness. Often, it’s the small, faithful choices that transform us.

This month, challenge yourself to:

  • Attend one weekday Mass.
  • Spend time with Jesus in Adoration.
  • Go to Confession.
  • Pray the Rosary as a family.
  • Start one new prayer habit.
  • Pray for your parish priest each day.
  • Keep Holy Water in your home and use it often.

The closer we grow to Jesus, the more peace we bring into our homes.

One of my favorite parts of being Catholic is that every month offers beautiful opportunities to celebrate.

August is filled with incredible saints who remind us that holiness is possible in every season of life. Read about Saint John Vianney, Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Saint Monica, and Saint Augustine of Hippo. Let their stories inspire your family.

Don’t forget one of the most beautiful feast days of the year—the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15. Decorate your home altar with flowers, attend Mass, pray the Rosary, and make a favorite dessert to celebrate our heavenly Mother.

Make the Most of Summer

Before summer comes to an end, give yourself permission to slow down and enjoy it.

Watch a sunset with your family. Plan one last picnic at the park. Go on one more adventure, even if it’s just exploring a nearby trail or grabbing ice cream together after dinner. Pick fresh flowers from your garden or a nearby field and place them in a simple vase on your kitchen table.

These little moments often become the memories our children carry with them long after they grow up.

Cultivate a Grateful Heart

Joy grows where gratitude lives. Write down ten blessings God has given you this month. Notice the little things you often overlook—the laughter around the dinner table, morning coffee on the porch, children running barefoot through the yard, fresh flowers on the counter, or the quiet moments after everyone has gone to bed.

The happiest people are rarely the ones with the most. They are the ones who notice the gifts God has already given them.

Live This Month on Purpose

It’s easy to let another month pass by while waiting for the next season to begin. But August is a gift.

Go outside. Laugh with your children. Pray with your spouse. Invite someone over. Celebrate the saints. Watch the sunset. Pick flowers. Thank God often. One day, these ordinary August afternoons will become the “good old days” your children remember with such affection.  So don’t wait for life to slow down before you begin living it.

Live this month fully.

Love deeply.

Pray faithfully.

And let August become a month your family will never forget.

In Christ,

Heather Johnson
