7 Ways to Glorify God in Your Catholic Home

There are so many simple and beautiful ways we, as Catholic women, can glorify God within our homes. And the good news is, it doesn’t have to be complicated or happen all at once. Creating a home that reflects your faith and points your family toward God takes time—and that’s okay. Start small, take one step at a time, and remember that even the ordinary things you do with great love can bring glory to God.

1) Put God at the Center of your home – prayer should be at the heart of our lives as Christians. Just like any relationship, our relationship with God needs time, attention, and love. God is worth investing in! Everything we have—our homes, our families, our time, and our gifts—is ultimately a blessing from Him.

So make Christ the center of your home, not only through prayer, but also through the way your home looks and feels. This can be as simple as hanging a crucifix on the wall, displaying beautiful holy images, creating a small home altar, or placing an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in a special place.

You certainly don’t need to do all of these things. Start with what feels meaningful for your family. The goal isn’t to have the “perfect Catholic home”—it is to create a home where Christ is welcomed, loved, and remembered in the ordinary moments of everyday life.

And don’t be afraid to let your home reflect Who you love. When someone walks through your door, let them see that your faith is not just something you practice on Sundays—it is part of who you are and how you live.

2) Be who God created you to be! That might sound simple, but we live in a world that is constantly telling women who we should be and what we need to accomplish in order to be enough. Instead of letting the world define you, make sure you are listening to God. Is God calling you to work outside the home? To stay home with your children? To create something, serve in a particular way, or live a quieter life than you imagined? His plan will look different for each of us—and that is a beautiful thing.

God has a very specific purpose for your life, and it may not look like what the world, your family, your friends, or even you once expected. Give yourself permission to embrace your own feminine genius and become the woman God created you to be.

I love the quote often attributed to St. Catherine of Siena: “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.”

You cannot fully live someone else’s dream for your life and, at the same time, freely follow the unique path God is placing before you. Spend time in prayer. Ask Him, “Lord, who did You create me to be? How do You want me to use the gifts You have given me?” Then have the courage to listen—and follow where He leads.

3) Embrace the life you are living right now, to often, we find ourselves living in the past or looking ahead to the future, while God is asking us to be present to the life He has given us right here and now.

I am naturally a planner, so I can easily get caught up in figuring out what is coming next. But I’ve realized that when I’m always thinking about the next thing, I miss so many of the beautiful moments happening right in front of me. There have even been times when I’ve loved planning a family vacation, only to get there and find myself thinking about what we are doing next instead of actually enjoying where we are!

I’ve had to learn to stop, breathe, look around, and enjoy the moment I am actually living.

My husband and I often remind each other, “These are the good old days.” One day, we will look back and wish we could have these ordinary moments again. Our children will never be these exact ages again. This season will pass, and a new one will come.

So embrace the life God has given you today. Notice the little blessings. Put down the phone. Stop worrying so much about what comes next. Enjoy the people sitting around your table. Thank God for what is right in front of you. There is so much beauty in the life we already have—we just have to slow down long enough to notice it.

4) Create a peaceful, joy-filled home – Try not to take life—or your home—too seriously! A beautiful home isn’t one that always looks perfect; it’s one where people feel loved, welcomed, and at peace.

Choose time with your family over a sink full of dishes sometimes. Invite your friends over even if your house doesn’t look Pinterest-perfect. Turn on soft music while you cook, or play something fun and dance around the kitchen with your kids. Keep your home picked up when you can, light a candle, open the windows, make something yummy—but remember that these things are meant to serve your family, not become another source of stress.

Your home is meant to be lived in. There will be messes, noise, crumbs, laundry, and plenty of imperfections. That’s okay! Create an atmosphere where your family can laugh, rest, pray, celebrate, and simply enjoy being together.

Peace doesn’t come from having a perfect home. It comes from the love that lives inside of it.

5) Use your home to bless others – remember, God doesn’t give us blessings simply to keep them to ourselves—He gives us blessings so that we can share them with others. And that includes our homes!

One of the simplest ways to glorify God through your home is by opening your doors and welcoming people in. Invite another family over for dinner and spend the evening building friendships, talking about life, and sharing the goodness of God. Have a simple game night with popcorn and drinks. Invite a friend over for coffee. It doesn’t have to be fancy or perfectly planned to be meaningful.

This past year, I started a Rosary group in my home. Each week, anywhere from 7–14 moms and their children would come over. We would pray the Rosary together, have brunch, and then sit around and talk while the children played. It became one of the most life-giving parts of my week! We built a beautiful little community while also growing closer to God and Our Blessed Mother.

And remember, hospitality is not the same thing as entertaining. Entertaining can sometimes make us feel like everything needs to be perfect—the house spotless, the table beautiful, and the food impressive. Hospitality is different. Hospitality simply says, “Come in. There is a place for you here.” It focuses less on impressing people and more on loving them.

Your home doesn’t have to be big. Your meal doesn’t have to be homemade. Your table doesn’t have to look Pinterest-worthy. People are much more likely to remember how they felt in your home than whether there were dishes in the sink.

So open the door. Put on the coffee. Order the pizza if you need to! Invite people into your real life and allow your home to become a place where friendships grow, people feel loved, faith is shared, and ultimately, God is glorified.

Sometimes I think we believe that in order to glorify God, we need to be doing something big. But most of our lives are made up of very ordinary moments—and those moments matter to God too.

Making dinner for your family, folding another load of laundry, listening to your child tell you a very long story, driving everyone where they need to go, cleaning the kitchen, welcoming your husband home, or simply creating a place where your family feels safe and loved—these can all be acts of love.

We don’t have to separate our faith from our everyday lives. We can invite God right into the middle of them. Offer Him your work, your frustrations, your joys, and even the things you would rather not be doing!

There is holiness to be found in ordinary life when we do ordinary things with great love.

Your home does not need to be perfect to glorify God.

You don’t need the perfect prayer routine, the perfect home altar, perfectly behaved children, a spotless kitchen, or a beautifully set table. God isn’t asking you to create someone else’s version of a Catholic home. He is asking you to faithfully love and serve Him in the home and life He has given you.

Start small. Say a prayer together. Hang a crucifix. Invite a friend over even though the house isn’t perfect. Put on some music and enjoy your children. Make dinner with love. Sit outside with your husband and thank God for the life you have been given.

Our homes are one of the greatest places we have to love others and glorify God. They are where so much of ordinary life happens—and ordinary life offered to God can become something incredibly beautiful.

So don’t wait until everything is perfect.

Love the people God has placed in your home, invite Him into the center of it, and let Him do something beautiful with the ordinary life you are already living.

In Christ,

Heather Johnson
