My 5 Catholic Mom Must Haves

In this post, I’m sharing some of my must-haves as a Catholic mom! These are items I use all the time and that have truly supported me on my journey through faith and motherhood.

1) A PRAYER SPACE – I truly believe every mom should have a special place where she can sit quietly and really enter into prayer. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It could be a corner of your bedroom, a peaceful spot in your home where the kids can play nearby, or even a small closet turned into your own little prayer nook. Whatever works best for your season of life!

Personally, I have a comfy oversized chair with blankets and pillows in the corner of my bedroom where I can go to pray anytime I need to. I encourage you to look for a quiet space with good lighting where you can keep your Bible, devotionals (this is the one I use its short and sweet!), holy images, lit Holy candle and a Rosary close at hand. Over time, make this little corner your favorite place in the house—a peaceful retreat where you can meet the Lord each day.

2) DAILY DEVOTIONALS – I also highly recommend having a good daily devotional that speaks to the season of life you’re in. For example, if you’re in the thick of motherhood, choose one written especially for moms. If you’re a caretaker or in another unique season, look for a devotional you can truly relate to right now. The right devotional can gently guide and encourage your prayer life in a very personal way.

And of course, the Catholic Bible is always a must-have. Spending time in Scripture each day is so important—it truly is God’s love letter to each of us.

3) READY TO GO MASS BAG – this has been incredibly helpful for me. I recommend keeping one dedicated bag stocked (HERE is the Bag I use) with all your Mass essentials so it’s truly grab-and-go on Sunday mornings.

Inside, you might include your Rosary, wet wipes (trust me—you’ll use them more than you think!), tissues, extra diapers and a few quiet faith-based items for the kids. Children’s Mass missals, Catholic picture books for kids, or simple quiet activities that help them engage with the faith are wonderful to have on hand. You can also tuck in anything you might need in a pinch. Having everything ready in one place makes getting out the door so peaceful.

4) PRAYING THE ROSARY – is a must. On the days when motherhood feels especially hard or I’m tempted to think I’ve fallen short, the Rosary gently brings my heart back to peace. In those moments, I ask Our Blessed Mother to intercede for me and to fill in where I am lacking—and time and time again, she shows up with such tender care.

Truly, we have the most beautiful example of motherhood in Mary.  If you’re not sure how to pray the Rosary, I’ve got you covered! I created a simple video that walks you through the Rosary bead by bead, plus a free printable to guide you along the way.

Of course, holy images are another beautiful must-have. Placing images like the Sacred Heart of Jesus where you will see them throughout the day is such a powerful reminder of how deeply God loves you. I especially love the Sacred Heart because His heart is literally on fire—it’s a vivid sign of how He burns with love for each of us. What a comforting, constant reminder of God’s love!

Really, any holy image that inspires your heart and draws you closer to the Lord is a wonderful choice.  HERE are some of my ideas.

5) FRIENDSHIPS – Sometimes I think we moms forget about ourselves, but I truly believe having a circle of friends to share both motherhood and the faith with is so important. We were never meant to do this alone.

I desired that kind of fellowship so much that I started a Walking with Purpose group at my parish, and it was wonderful. Unfortunately, due to family obligations, I eventually had to step away from that Bible study. But the Lord had other plans! I ended up starting a Mommy Rosary group for stay-at-home moms, and it has been such a blessing.

I open my home, set out some brunch goodies like an egg bake, muffins, berries something like that.  I try to have a sweet and savory and fresh fruit at every event, sometimes I just run to costco and pick somethings up.  I also provide Rosaries for anyone who needs to borrow one. We pray together and then chat about motherhood and faith while the kids play nearby. It’s a relaxed, no-pressure kind of morning—but so life-giving.

Each Thursday I invite about 12 moms, and it has quietly become a little ministry with very little prep and so much joy.

You can often find wonderful Catholic mom friends through parish groups like moms’ ministries, Bible studies, or rosary groups at your local church, local Catholic homeschooling groups or play groups can also be beautiful places to connect with like-hearted women who share your faith and motherhood journey.   Look for groups in your parish bulletin like Walking With Purpose or even MOPS is a nation wide organization that connects moms.  Its not Catholic but it was so great for me!

Sweet mama, you are doing holy work. I pray these little favorites bless your home and draw you closer to the Lord in this beautiful season of motherhood.

In Christ,

Heather Johnson
