Candlemas With the Family

Candlemas, celebrated each year on February 2nd, is a beautiful Catholic feast day that commemorates the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple—40 days after Christmas. It’s also known as the Feast of the Presentation, and it shines a special spotlight on Jesus as the Light of the World, which is why candles are traditionally blessed on this day. For families, Candlemas is a meaningful and simple way to bring faith into the home through cozy traditions.  Here are eight ideas you might enjoy doing with your family!

1. Bless and light candles at home
A simple and meaningful way to celebrate Candlemas at home is to bless and light candles together as a family. Gather everyone in one room, dim the lights, and place a candle (or a few) in the center of the table. If you have blessed candles from church, use those, or light regular candles as a symbol of Christ’s light. Begin with the Sign of the Cross, read a short verse like “Jesus is the Light of the World” (John 8:12), and pray together, asking Jesus to shine in your home and hearts. Then light the candles and take a quiet moment to reflect on His love and guidance.

2. Attend Mass and participate in the candle blessing
If your parish offers a Candlemas Mass, it’s one of the most beautiful ways to celebrate as a family. Many churches bless candles during Mass, and some even have a candle procession to honor Jesus as the Light of the World. Bringing your children to experience this tradition helps them see the Church year come alive and gives the day a special, sacred feeling.

3. Read the Candlemas Gospel together
Candlemas is the perfect time to read the Gospel story of Mary and Joseph presenting Jesus in the Temple. As a family, read Luke 2:22–40, then talk about Simeon and Anna and how they recognized Jesus right away. Even a short conversation helps children understand that Jesus is the promised Savior and the light we are meant to follow.

4. Walk through your home with candles and pray
A special Candlemas tradition is to do a simple home prayer while carrying a candle (here is a safer one or for little ones use these) through each room. As you walk, you can pray a short blessing like, “Jesus, bless this home and fill it with Your light.” It’s a beautiful way to remind your children that faith doesn’t only belong in church—Jesus is meant to be the center of your family life every day.

5. Make Candlemas crepes or pancakes together
In many Catholic cultures, Candlemas is celebrated with crepes or pancakes because they are golden and round like the light of the sun. Cooking together makes the feast day feel cozy and memorable, especially for kids. You can make it extra fun by letting everyone choose their toppings while talking about Jesus being the light that warms and guides our hearts.

6. Act out the Presentation in the Temple
Kids love acting out Bible stories, and Candlemas is an easy one to bring to life! Let your children dress up as Mary, Joseph, and Simeon, and use a doll as baby Jesus.  This fun activity helps children remember the story in a joyful and meaningful way.

7. Teach kids the meaning with a simple sentence
Candlemas is a great day to teach children faith in a way they can easily understand. A simple phrase like, “Jesus is the Light of the World,” helps them connect the candles to the meaning of the feast. You can reinforce it by having them draw a candle, a church, or the Holy Family, and talk about how Jesus lights our path when we make choices.

8. Do a “bring the light” kindness activity
Candlemas is also a perfect opportunity to remind your family that we are called to share Christ’s light with others. Choose one small act of kindness—write a card to someone, pray for a friend, deliver cookies to a neighbor, or help someone in need. Even something simple helps children understand that celebrating Jesus as the light means living with love, generosity, and faith.

Those are some simple ways to celebrate! Have you ever observed Candlemas? If so, what traditions do you and your family enjoy on this feast day?

In Christ,
