Fourteen years of motherhood has taught me something about traditions: you don’t have to do them all. Over the years, I’ve joyfully added new Catholic traditions to our family life, and I’ve also quietly let go of the ones that looked wonderful in my imagination but just didn’t fit our family. Some traditions our children naturally outgrew, while others simply never captured their hearts. That’s okay! Every family is different. The traditions that have stood the test of time are the ones that have brought us closer to God, filled our home with joy, and become memories my children look forward to year after year. Today, I’m sharing the Catholic traditions our family has loved the most in hopes that they might bless your family too.
First and foremost—Sunday Mass! Yes, it’s our obligation as Catholics, but it’s so much more than checking a box. For our family, it’s a chance to pause, worship together, and reset our hearts for the week ahead.
One of my favorite parts is watching our three boys serve at the altar. There is something so special about seeing them up there, and I have to admit…I think it helps keep them a little more focused during Mass too! (Parents, we’ll take every little win we can get. 😉)
And don’t let the celebration end when you walk out of church! Sunday is a little Easter every single week—a feast day! Make it feel different from the rest of the week. Have pancakes after Mass, gather everyone around the table for a big family dinner, pull out the fancy dishes, or surprise the kids with dessert. They may not remember every homily years from now, but they’ll remember that Sundays felt joyful, special, and centered on Jesus. Those are the kinds of traditions that quietly shape a family’s faith for years to come.
2) Enthrone your home to the Sacred Heart of Jesus – While the Feast of the Sacred Heart is celebrated in June, you don’t have to wait until then to enthrone your home. In fact, you can do it any time of the year!
This has become one of my favorite Catholic family traditions because it is such a beautiful way of saying, “Jesus, You are the King of this home.” We invite Him to guide our decisions, bless our family, protect our home, and remind us every single day that everything we have belongs to Him.
The Enthronement itself is simple. Place a beautiful image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in a place of honor in your home, gather your family together, and pray an Act of Enthronement, dedicating your family to His Sacred Heart. Many families even make it a little celebration with a special meal or dessert afterward—because any reason to celebrate Jesus is a good one!
The promises connected with the Enthronement come from the private revelations Jesus gave to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque and were later promoted throughout the world by Father Mateo Crawley-Boevey. While Catholics are not required to believe private revelations, this devotion has been embraced and encouraged by many saints and popes throughout the centuries.
Jesus promised many beautiful blessings to those devoted to His Sacred Heart. He promises to give us the graces we need for our vocation, establish peace in our homes, comfort us in our trials, and be our refuge throughout life and especially at the hour of death. He promises abundant blessings upon our work, mercy for sinners, renewed zeal for lukewarm hearts, growth in holiness for those who are already fervent, and blessings upon every home where His Sacred Heart is honored. He also promised that those who spread devotion to His Sacred Heart would have their names written in His Heart, and He offered the grace of final perseverance to those who faithfully receive Holy Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months.
If you’ve never enthroned your home before, I can’t recommend it enough. Find a beautiful image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, place it somewhere your family will see every day, gather everyone together, and pray the Act of Enthronement. Then, each year—especially around the Feast of the Sacred Heart—renew your family’s dedication to Jesus. It’s a simple tradition that can have a lasting impact on your home, reminding everyone who walks through your front door that Christ truly is the heart of your family.
3) First Saturday Devotion as a family – If you’ve never celebrated the First Saturdays devotion, this is such a beautiful tradition to add to your family’s spiritual life. It comes from the messages of Our Lady of Fatima, who asked us to make reparation to her Immaculate Heart and to pray for the conversion of sinners.
On the first Saturday of five consecutive months, Our Lady asked that we:
- Go to Confession (within about eight days before or after the First Saturday).
- Receive Holy Communion.
- Pray five decades of the Rosary.
- Spend 15 additional minutes keeping Our Lady company by quietly meditating on one or more of the mysteries of the Rosary.
Why five Saturdays? Our Lady explained that they are offered in reparation for five types of offenses committed against her Immaculate Heart: denying her Immaculate Conception, denying her perpetual virginity, denying her role as the Mother of God and spiritual Mother of all people, leading children away from her, and treating her sacred images with contempt.
One of the beautiful promises attached to this devotion is that Our Lady said she would assist at the hour of death with all the graces necessary for salvation those who faithfully complete the Five First Saturdays with the required intentions.
Our family loves making the First Saturdays feel special. After all the items ask us to do we usually go do something fun like go bowling, go to the pool, go to a new park or even just get doughnuts but we make is fun after a whole morning of church.
4) Create a Mary Garden – One of my favorite Catholic traditions is creating a Mary Garden! There is just something so peaceful about having a special place outdoors dedicated to Our Blessed Mother. Think of it as a tiny oasis where faith and flowers meet.
To create a Mary Garden is simple, place a weatherproof statue of Mother Mary in a quiet part of your yard, then surround her with beautiful flowers and plants. We love planting perennials so they come back year after year—it’s like Mary gives us a cheerful little “welcome back” every spring!
One of my favorite moments of the day is looking out the kitchen window while I’m washing dishes and seeing Our Lady surrounded by blooming flowers. Somehow those everyday chores feel a little more peaceful. It gently reminds me to say a quick Hail Mary, thank God for His blessings, or simply pause for a moment of gratitude.
Our little Mary Garden has brought so much joy to our family over the years. It has become a place to pray, to slow down, and to remember Mary’s beautiful “yes” to God. And honestly, every backyard is just a little prettier with Our Lady smiling from the garden.
5) Create a Home Altar – If there is one tradition I recommend to every Catholic family, it’s creating a home altar. Think of it as a little sacred space of your home—a place that quietly invites you to stop, slow down, and spend a few moments with Jesus. Whether it’s for your personal prayer time, family Rosary, or simply a place to light a candle and thank God for the day, having a dedicated prayer space makes it so much easier to turn your heart toward Him.
On our home altar, I always place Jesus at the very center because He is the heart of our faith weather it is a Sacred Heart of Jesus or a Crucifix or both! Around Him, I decorate with a statue of Our Blessed Mother, our large family Catholic Bible, a candle, fresh flowers, Liturgical Cloth, and sometimes our favorite saint depending on the liturgical season. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or Pinterest-perfect. It can be as simple or as beautiful as you like.
What matters most isn’t how your altar looks—it’s that it becomes a place where your family encounters Christ. Over time, your children will naturally associate that little corner of your home with peace, prayer, and the comforting reminder that God is always with your family.
Bonus – Baptism Birthday! This is actually a brand-new tradition we’re starting this year, and I can hardly wait! One of my dear friends celebrates each of her children’s baptism birthdays, and the moment she told me about it, I thought, I’m in!
Each year on the anniversary of your child’s Baptism, celebrate with a little family party! After all, our Baptism is the day we became children of God and members of His Church. As important as our birthday is, our baptism birthday is even more important because it’s the day our new life in Christ began.
We’re planning to keep it simple but meaningful. I’ll set the table with a white tablecloth, pull out a special baptism plate(pictured above great as baptism gifts), and serve white cupcakes for dessert. I’ll even encourage everyone to wear white as a reminder of the purity and new life we received through Baptism. We can talk about the child’s baptism day, look at pictures, tell stories, and even renew our baptismal promises together as a family.
I have a feeling this is going to become one of those traditions our children look forward to every year. Sometimes it’s the simplest celebrations that leave the biggest mark on a child’s heart and help them see just how precious their Catholic faith really is. I just have to remember to mark my calendar for them!
