7 Ways to Honor All Soul’s Day

All Souls’ Day is November 2nd a special time for Catholic families to pause and remember our loved ones who have gone before us. It’s a day filled with love, prayer, and hope — remindering that we are still connected to those in heaven and in purgatory through our faith. As a family, we can honor this beautiful day in simple and meaningful ways that teach our children about prayer, mercy, and eternal life. Here are seven heartfelt things your family can do together on All Souls’ Day.

Go to Mass – there is nothing more important then offering up your mass for a Soul that has passed!   Asking God to let these souls into heaven is a big prayer but he loves that we ask!

Display the Deceased ones picture – On  your home alter or clear a special area in the house to display the pictures of those you know who have passed.  This is to remember them and pray for them throughout the whole month of November.

Pray for Souls at a Cemetery – something you could do is go to the cemetery and bring flowers for all the graves you know or graves who have no flowers and pray for those souls!

Pray the All Soul’s Prayer – Pray for the All Soul’s prayer at home or at the cemetery.  I will link the prayer printable here.  This prayer is great for all ages and you can pray it everyday in November!

Light A Candle – Light a candle and place it where you can easily see it so you remember to pray for the souls all day!  You could even write the names on the Candles so that you remember who you are praying for! Offer the light as a symbol of Christ’s eternal mercy and presence.

Make a Family Meal in Remembrance of that person – Make a traditional dish that your loved ones enjoyed making or eating and share it with your family.  During the meal you could share the memories you have had with the person.

Teach the Children about Purgatory and Hope – This might seem like a hard thing to talk about with really little ones but the older the kids get the more they should understand how we need to understand someday we will all pass away.  Share with them the joys of being in Heaven with Jesus for ever!  Explain how we can get to heaven and present them with lots of hope!

In Christ,

  1. I am Bolivian born and as all catholic families I follow our tradition to set a table with a black tablecloth, photos of our families that passed, flowers, candles, a large crucifix, an image of Mary, for us Our Lady of Copacabana.
foods that the departed liked, candy, pastries, favorite drinks.
Cakes, sweet bread in the shape of ladders, to come down from Heaven, horses, llamas, tantawawas, this are shaped like wrapped babies.
we wait that the souls will arrive to visit at midday on November 1 and depart on November 2.
    we play their favorite music.
For us Catholic the Souls of our loved ones are close to us.
Also children can learn looking at photos as far as wearing long dresses, learn who they are and their roots.
    Is a religious event.
In Bolivia people visit cemeteries, hired musicians to serenade.
after the second of November all what was offered to the Souls ,except what is not fresh is given to the poor.

  2. The Prayer for the Saint Mothers Litany is not here. I would love to have it. Also, the book link is broken, and the 30-day prayer for all souls in purgatory. Just growing in my faith and love the website and Heather!
